What in the world is pickleball?

Pickleball was created with one thing in mind—fun.  A paddle sport created for all ages and skill levels. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.

The sport was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, outside Seattle, WA. Pickleball has a very interesting name—especially since no pickles are used. Accounts of how the name originated differ:

1. According to Joel Pritchards’ wife ( Joan), she started calling the game pickleball because “the combination of different sports reminded me of the pickle boat in crew where oarsmen were chosen from the leftovers of other boats.”

2. However, according to Barney McCallum, the game was officially named after the Prichards’ dog, Pickles, who would chase the ball and run off with it.

Here is a simple video to explain the rules:

Why do so many people love this game?

Pickleball is very simple and doesn’t take long to learn how to play. Because the amount of court you cover is small and the wiffle ball is slower than a regular ball, the sport can be played by all ages and skill levels. In High River, people love the game for the social aspect as well. You can show up by yourself or with friends and always feel like you’re part of a team.
